The Aasee: the blue-green oasis in the centre of the city
The picturesque Aasee is a popular local recreation area, just a 15-minute walk from the town hall on the Prinzipalmarkt. Whether it's a walk along the waterfront, a visit to one of the many cafes and restaurants, a sailing trip, a rowing excursion or a trip on the sun-powered “Solaaris” water bus, there are plenty of activities to do around the reservoir. It is also the perfect backdrop for a picnic or cosy barbecue evening.
On the seven-kilometre circular walk around the lake, you can experience art in the open air as you come across sculptures from the “Sculpture Projects”, an international public art exhibition.
Lake Aasee is also the setting for a legendary tragic love story: the international press reported on the unrequited love at Lake Aasee when the black swan Petra fell in love with a larger-than-life white swan-shaped pedalo in 2006, and stayed by her lifeless partner's side for about three years.
