The Old Town of Münster: Experience historical flair
The picturesque Old Town of Münster impresses with a variety of tourist highlights. Stroll through its narrow cobbled streets, past cosy cafes and shops, and let yourself be enchanted by the charm of a bygone era.
At the heart of the historic city centre is the majestic St. Paul's Cathedral with its imposing Gothic architecture, which has been Münster's landmark since the 13th century and offers a special attraction inside with its astronomical clock and carillon, dating from 1542. Incidentally, Münster's well-known and popular weekly market takes place in front of the cathedral every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
Next door is the Prinzipalmarkt, one of the most beautiful squares in Germany, with its characteristic gabled houses and arcades, as well as the 14th-century Gothic town hall. It was also the site of the Peace of Westphalia, which concluded the end of the Thirty Years' War in Europe. The market and town church of St Lamberti is notorious for its unusual iron cages on the façade, which were once used to publicly display those executed during the gruesome Middle Ages.
